Waukomis is located a few miles south of Enid on US 81. Although it is directly in the path of the old Chisholm Trail, there were no stops there, or any events until the railroad was built which paralleled the trail. Waukomis became a stop for the train, and there was once a shoot-out at the train depot between a US Marshal and a train robber. Waukomis today is a quiet town, with many of it's downtown buildings still standing, including the old skating rink {above right}. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is one of the oldest of that denomination in Garfield County, and is still in the original building. |
